Solo: A Star Wars Story Trailer Review

With not long until the movie comes out, many movie pundits and fans began to wonder when we would get a first look at the Star Wars spin off movie about young Han Solo. The movie comes out in the end of May and we have only just seen the start of the marketing push. Personally I am not phased my the delay in marketing, I don’t believe we need to see trailers 12 months out, and it doesn’t really matter when the footage comes out, I was always going to see this movie opening day. But on the Super Bowl we got our first little teaser and the next day we saw the first full trailer. I commented on the teaser here.

Lets get down to the trailer, whilst I am not 100% sold on Alden Ehrenreich as Han Solo, it is a positive that he is not doing  Harrison Ford impersonation, because as cool as that may be, ultimately it would get old real quick. I liked that he had some mannerisms of Han Solo, in particular the cockiness, though I wasn’t a fan of the line about being “the best (pilot) in the galaxy.” Not a great line, though maybe it will work in the movie.

We get a good look at Donald Glover as Lando, which may be some of the best casting I have seen in recent times, though we only get a look not anything concrete in the way of a performance. The shot of him and his droid buddy doing a salute together definitely feels like something Lando would do, and I think the droid L3-37 (Leet) looks like it will be similar to K2-SO from Rogue One, a scene stealer. We don’t get a lot about the other characters but I definitely want to know more.

I will add that the final shot of the trailer, the Millennium Falcon flying in the storm around the TIE-Fighters and Star Destroyer looks amazing and the line of “thought we were in trouble there for a second, but it’s fine, we’re fine” is just a fantastic tease of the Han Solo we are going to see on the big screen.

It is a solid first teaser and trailer combination to get the audience interested, and I think should help appeal to some of the Star Wars fans who felt The Last Jedi didn’t feel Star Wars enough for them. I can’t say whether I think the movie will be good but I am excited to see it and thats the point of a trailer, to build excitement.

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story,’ an adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.
