Throughout the Marvel Cinematic Universe the term Infinity Stones are used in multiple movies. In fact in about half of the movies to date there has been a stone or a referenced, with five of the six stones being discovered. Before we get to Avengers: Infinity War, lets take a look back at the stones, what they are, where they are currently and what movies they are in.

The Space Stone
Movies: Thor, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Avengers
Colour: Blue
About: Also known as The Tesseract, the Space Stone is the first of the Infinity Stones to appear in the MCU. Used by Red Skull in The First Avenger to power the HYDRA weapons, it was later taken by SHIELD until Loki used it to bring an alien army, The Chitauri, to earth. After the battle of New York, Thor used The Tesseract to transport Loki and himself back to Asgard, where it lived in Odin’s vault. Based on a quick shot from Thor: Ragnarok and the Infinity War Trailer it might be a safe guess that The Tesseract ened up on the Asgardian ship that escaped during Ragnarok. It is also worth noting that in the trailer, Thanos has a Blue Stone, and we see Loki lifting The Tesseract up, maybe he has gone bad again, or maybe this is his attempt to save his brother and his people.

The Reality Stone
Movies: Thor: The Dark World
Colour: Red
About: Also referred to as The Aether, it is the main reason for conflict in Thor: The Dark World. Malekith, the leader of the Dark Elves wishes to use The Aether to reset the universe to a pre Big Bang state so that the Dark Elves can rule again. During the movie the Aether possesses Jane Foster, so Thor with the help of Loki, must find away to stop Malekith and save Jane. In the post credit scene, Lady Sif and Volstagg take The Aether to Knowhere and place it with The Collector for safekeeping. Based on the footage from the Infinity War Trailer, Thanos does not have The Reality Stone.

The Power Stone
Movies: Guardians of the Galaxy
Colour: Purple
About: Throughout the first Guardians of the Galaxy The Power Stone is referred to as The Orb. Ronan seeks after the Orb to destroy Xandar and the Nova Corp in an effort to return the Kree to their powerful status in the galaxy. When Peter Quill aka Star Lord steals The Orb first, Ronan with the help of Thanos send Gamora and Nebula after him. After Nebula betrays Thanos, her and Quill take The Orb to Knowhere to The Collector, where they (and the audience) learn about The Infinity Stones. After the Guardians of the Galaxy defeat Ronan, they hand The Orb to The Nova Corp for safekeeping, for the time being. In the Infinity War Trailer, the first Stone Thanos has is purple, meaning he probably attacked Xandar first.

The Mind Stone
Movies: The Avengers – Avengers: Age of Ultron
Colour: Yellow
About: The Mind Stone was originally hidden inside of Loki’s sceptre during the first Avengers film, when Loki used it to control the minds of Haykeye and Erik Selvig. After the fall of SHIELD, the sceptre fell into the hands of HYDRA and Baron Von Strucker, who used it to conduct experiements on people to give them enhanced powers, thus creating Scarlet Witch and Quick Silver. When The Avengers steal the sceptre, Tony Stark unwittingly used the stone to create Ultron, an evil artificial intelligence hell bent on forcing the evolution of the human race. Eventually Thor, Banner and Stark use the stone and Tony’s artificial intelligence J.A.R.V.I.S to create Vision. In Captain America: Civil War, The Mind Stone is still in Visions forehead, but based on the footage from the Infinity War Trailer, it might not be there for much longer.

The Time Stone
Movies: Doctor Strange
Colour: Green
About: This is the third Stone to have a home on Earth, in the form of an amulet known as the Eye of Agamotto, Earths first Sorcerer. It was Stephen Strange who began to use the Time Stone, using it in one of the best takedowns of a villain in the MCU. Strange used the eye to trap Dormammu in a time loop until he finally gave in and retreated to the Dark Dimension. The Stone was returned to Kamar-Taj, where it is still presumably in the Infinity War Trailer.

The Soul Stone
Movies: Unknown
Colour: Orange
About: Unknown, yet. It is likely to be in Wakanda if the Trailers for Infinity War are to be believed. We have one more movie coming out before Infinity War and that is Black Panther. Now that doesn’t mean anything, Marvel may have some plan to introduce the Stone in Captain Marvel, or even in Avengers 4. Right now all we can do is speculate about the location of the stone. That being said this Stone does have some pretty cool powers that could lead to some interesting confrontations.

The Gauntlet
Movies: Avengers: Age of Ultron, Thor: Ragnarok (A Fake), Avengers: Infinity War
Colour: Gold
About: Not much is known about Thanos’ Gauntlet in the Cinematic Universe, but it was designed to house The Infinity Stones and harness their power. It can be seen in the post credit scene of Avengers: Age of Ultron when Thanos opens up a locker of sorts and puts on the Gauntlet. It can also be seen in the Infinity War Trailer with Thanos adding The Power Stone and the Space Stone to it.
