I didn’t see as many films this month as I would have liked but I still managed to fit a few in. I was surprised by the quality of some of the movies, with some of them living up to my expectations and others not quite as good as I expected.
Here are the movies I saw in September ranked from Best to Worst.
IT – 8/10
I really loved this movie. I thought it was brilliant how the movie focused more on the concept of fear and frightening the characters, not trying to frighten the audience. There are elements of a great coming of age movie like Stand By Me or The Goonies, with the addition of a murderous clown.
Battle of the Sexes – 7/10
This well-acted biopic is extremely relevant movie for many of the social issues going on with the world. It tells the story of Billie Jean King and her fight for women’s equality in tennis, and how she played former Men’s champion Bobbie Riggs in what was dubbed The Battle of the Sexes. It could see Emma Stone get a second nomination for Best Actress.
Kingsman: The Golden Circle – 6.5/10
The second instalment of the Kingsman franchise see the Kingsman join forces with the American group The Statesmen to take on The Golden Circle. It might not be as good as the first movie but it was still a lot of fun. The addition of Elton John was definitely a high point.
American Made – 6.5/10
A gorgeously shot, well-made Tom Cruise movie, with subject matter we have seen get covered excessively recently. This is inspired by true events, but could be seen more as a lose true story of Barry Seal, a CIA pilot who helped traffic guns and drugs through North and South America.
Colossal – 6.5/10
An extremely weird sci-fi dramatic comedy. Colossal has some great performances and a random plot. Sometimes the sci-fi element works but it doesn’t seem to always fit. Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis both give fantastic performances that carry the film.
American Assassin – 6/10
The main problem with American Assassin is that it feels like two different films, and it’s problems could be fixed with just a few plot changes. It still was a fun movie with some cool action sequences, I do hope it gets a sequel.
