I will be keeping this short and will post a spoiler review later.

Marvel has not had the best track record when it comes to making sequels to their amazing first films. Whilst the Captain America sequels are considered better than the original many of the other sequels are considered to be some of the weakest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Whilst Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 does not live up to the epic levels achieved by the first Guardians movie (in my top 5) it is still a highly enjoyable movie with great characters, a cool story, amazing visuals and of course Baby Groot.

Vol. 2 sees the return of the Guardians who are working as Heroes for Hire, helping a group of people known as the Sovereign kill a giant creature that is eating their power source. When Rocket decides to steal from The Sovereign, the Guardians are engulfed in a space battle where they crash land only to be saved by the mysterious Ego. From there the Guardians encounter The Ravengers, The Sovereign and a new power in the universe. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 sees the return of Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Michael Rooker and Karen Gillan with the addition of Pom Klementieff, Elizabeth Debicki and Kurt Russell as Ego.

As as big science fiction comic book movie goes Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a great fun film. It offers a lot of laughs, a lot of action and cool characters. The story does not feel as strong as it did in the first movie with the middle act in particular feeling like three separate movies. This is perhaps the biggest let down of the movie, with the middle act feeling like there is too many moving parts whilst also feeling like it slows down. The fortunate thing is it does not fall into the trap of world building so the movie can stand on it’s own. I actually enjoyed many elements of the story including the idea behind the villains and the way the Guardians now work together as a ‘family’, to quote Drax. Plus you need to talk about family; it is a Vin Diesel movie after all. The idea that the dynamic between the Guardians has shifted from the first film actually works really well, similar to how the Avengers dynamic changes between the films.

Baby Groot

Two of the biggest show stealers are Dave Bautista as Drax and Vin Diesel as Baby Groot. Director James Gunn worked out how to capitalise on the unique elements of both these characters that make them great. The cuteness factor of Baby Groot does not wear off and it is so easy to enjoy him whenever he is on screen. The way the opening montage incorporates him in to he guardians is fantastic. Marvel did not think Baby Groot would be as big of a hit with the first Guardians but they definitely course corrected for the better. Even in the marketing campaign you could tell he would be a show stealer. Drax is easily the funniest character due to his nature of taking everything literally and having absolutely no filter. The art of this character is praise to the comedic nature of Bautista but also the direction of Gunn with none of Drax’s humour feeling cringe worthy.

Again we get great performances with no one faulting any of the actors. Chris Pratt is excellent as Star Lord, Zoe Saldana’s Gamora is an awesome female lead and her relationship with Nebula played by Karen Gillan is fantastic as we delve deeper into the relationship between the sisters. Kurt Russell is brilliant casting as Ego and the way the story explains who he is in relation to the wider universe is another credit to James Gunn as a filmmaker.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is a great addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is a really enjoyable film. It may not make it into the top 5 Marvel movies list but it would be close too it. Whilst it may not be as good as the first movie it does a great job to stand on its own and is an overall enjoyable movie that should be seen at the cinema. I give Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 a 80%
