Here are the categories most people will be interested in. Not that all the categories shouldn’t be shown respect but the big six below are the ones the general public take an interest in. I list the favourite, a potential winner and my choice. Let me know who you think should, could, and will win in the comments.
- La La Land
- Hacksaw Ridge
- Hidden Figures
- Hell or High Water
- Manchester by the Sea
Favourite: La La Land – Everyone is talking about this beautiful love letter to old Hollywood, which was nominated for 14 awards. There’s a strong chance that this will be the winner on the day based on how much love and adoration there is for the project.
Wild Card: Moonlight – Despite this movies deep message and incredible acting there is also the aspect that it ticks all of the Academy’s boxes in terms of a Best Picture film. Moonlight could be the winner this year.
My Choice: Hidden Figures – I thought this movie was brilliant, it was so much fun and yet had a powerful message that reflects many of the problems seen in modern society.
- Damien Chazelle, La La Land
- Mel Gibson, Hacksaw Ridge
- Barry Jenkins, Moonlight
- Kenneth Lonergan, Manchester by the Sea
- Denis Villeneuve, Arrival
Favourite: Damien Chazelle – There is a lot of love towards Chazelle for what he was able to create with La La Land. It is quite difficult to pull off a musical in the way he did it, plus the Academy did not recognise him for Whiplash.
Wild Card: Barry Jenkins – Jenkins took a massive risk by shooting his movie over three time periods with three different actors. It is hard to make the audience relate to different actors but Jenkins pulled it off. If Jenkins wins La La Land will get best Picture.
My Choice: Mel Gibson – It would be great if either of the above mentioned Directors won this award but it would be pretty impressive to see Gibson recognised for his talent as a film maker.
- Casey Affleck, Manchester by the Sea
- Andrew Garfield, Hacksaw Ridge
- Ryan Gosling, La La Land
- Viggo Mortensen, Captain Fantastic
- Denzel Washington, Fences
Favourite: Casey Affleck – While Manchester By the Sea may not be the best story of the year Casey Affleck should be recognised for his talent in the movie. He has already won several awards for his role in the film. He has been the favourite for a while.
Wild Card: Denzel Washington – The man who could upset Affleck’s chances is Denzel for his role in Fences. A strong character role plus years of service could push him over the line and some of the Affleck controversy could give him the edge.
My Choice: Andrew Garfield – Both of the above mentioned actors give great performances in their movies, I believe that Garfield did a fantastic job in the true story of Hacksaw Ridge that it would be great to see him get the win.
- Isabelle Huppert, Elle
- Ruth Negga, Loving
- Natalie Portman, Jackie
- Emma Stone,La La Land
- Meryl Streep, Florence Foster Jenkins
Favourite: Emma Stone – Emma Stone has been the front runner for this category since the movie came out. She gives an incredible performance in La La Land and has been a crowd favourite.
Wild Card: Natalie Portman/ Isabelle Huppert – Similar to Casey Affleck, Jackie may not have been a well-regarded movie but Portman’s performance was a massive talking point. Isabelle Huppert has come into the light recently so a potential late surge could get her to the front. She could pull a Mark Rylance
My Choice: Emma Stone – See above
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
- Mahershala Ali, Moonlight
- Jeff Bridges, Hell or High Water
- Lucas Hedges, Manchester by the Sea
- Dev Patel, Lion
- Michael Shannon, Nocturnal Animals
Favourite: Mahershala Ali – Ali has been on a hot streak with supporting awards for his role in Moonlight, where he is able to steal the show despite being a supporting actor. If he wins it will be much deserved.
Wild Card: Dev Patel – The has been a lot of love from the academy towards Lion and Dev Patal recently had a win at the BAFTAs that could see him sneak in for the win.
My Choice: Mahershala Ali – Ali was brilliant in Moonlight and deserves the award.
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
- Viola Davis, Fences
- Naomie Harris, Moonlight
- Nicole Kidman, Lion
- Octavia Spencer, Hidden Figures
- Michelle Williams, Manchester by the Sea
Favourite: Viola Davis – Viola Davis has been the favourite since been announce since she is now the most nominated woman of colour but she has also won awards for the role before in the Broadway showing of Fences. Viola Davis is an incredible actress and is likely to take out the award despite her being a lead in the movie.
Wild Card: Naomie Harris – What Naomie Harris was able to do with just a few scenes and only three days on set was incredible. Her portrayal as a junkie mum was haunting and hopefully she is recognised. If Davis was not nominated in this category she would definitely be the winner.
My Choice: Naomie Harris – See Above
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE FILM
- Kubo and the Two Strings
- My Life as a Zucchini
- The Red Turtle
Favourite: Zootopia – Made Disney over a Billion Dollars at the box office and was universal well received by critics and fans for its message regarding diversity.
Wild Card: Moana – One of Disney’s best movies in recent times had a strong run at the box office and was loved for it’s soundtrack. It took a different look at a culture and mythology whilst having a strong female lead.
My Choice: Moana – See above. I loved this movie. it should be given all the awards.
