Super Bowl Trailers

Every year studios pay an enormous amount of money to show a trailer at the Super Bowl since hundreds of millions of people watch the game around the world. This year it cost $5million for 60 seconds so studios had to be very select with what they showed to make sure they got their moneys worth. Here is the list of trailers we got to see.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

We got a new trailer for the second instalment of the Guardians of the Galaxy; where we got a look at some of the awesome action we can expect to see. This teaser confirms that the Guardians roster will grow with the inclusions of Nebula, Yondu and Mantis. A big push with the marketing for this movie is cashing in on the cuteness of Baby Groot and the humour of Dave Bautista as Drax. It is really hard to not laugh at him. The marketing for the movie has been great with nothing being spoiled about the story and we are yet to see Kurt Russell as Ego. Very excited for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2.

Set to the backdrop of Awesome Mixtape #2, ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ continues the team’s adventures as they unravel the mystery of Peter Quill’s true parentage.

 Logan

With Logan less than a month away it is curious that Fox would have a trailer for the Super Bowl. That being said this was an awesome trailer. We got a look at Stephen Merchant as Caliban, who looks really creepy and some footage of what appears to be X-23 running through the woods with a group of children, potentially mutants. We saw a lot of the similar shots already shown in previous trailers but the music used in the marketing of Logan has been phenomenal, this time is was a haunting version of Amazing Grace. Logan is out the first week of March and I’ll be seeing it opening day.

In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hideout on the Mexican border. But Logan’s attempts to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.

Transformers: The Last Knight

This trailer has everything you would expect form the Transformers marketing machine. Lots of explosions with minimal plot details (most likely due to the fact there wont be a plot). We see more focus on the Transformers rather than the human element, which is different especially since some of the characters form the original films are back. Overall it’s a cool trailer that does not give too much away but it is hard to stay hyped for this movie given how many times the franchise has performed poorly. We do not get to see anything about the plot regarding King Arthur, Nazi, Winston Churchill or the time travelling, so I can not get around this trailer.

Humans and Transformers are at war, Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving our future lies buried in the secrets of the past, in the hidden history of Transformers on Earth.

Ghost in the Shell

This trailer is only 30 seconds long so not much is shown but it previews some cool new footage of Scarlett Johansson as The Major. The visual effects in this movie look awesome, which is all I have to go on since I know nothing about the story of the movie. I am excited to see it though as it looks really cool. Hopefully it is a great adaptation that shows respect to the source material.

Based on the internationally acclaimed sci-fi manga series, “Ghost in the Shell” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotics’ advancements in cyber technology

Baywatch

I am starting to get a little nervous with the marketing for this movie that they have shown all the best jokes in the trailers. Most of the footage in todays spot had already been scene with the exception of a few new jokes; I think they need to stop with the trailers in an effort to keep audiences interested or risk showing too much and losing viewers.

Two unlikely prospective lifeguards vie for jobs alongside the buff bodies who patrol a beach in California.

Fate of the Furious

Still cannot forgive the stupid title but this trailer has me excited for the movie. It will be interesting to see what happens in the movie to see Dom turn on his family because through out all the films, he’s had family. The car sequences and the action look fantastic and F Gary Grey did a great job with Straight Outta Compton so his take on the action franchise intrigues me. I am so pumped for this movie, the Rock and Jason Statham will have some awesome action and the bad macho humour is always a key feature in the Fast and Furious films. So excited for April.

When a mysterious woman seduces Dom into the world of crime and a betrayal of those closest to him, the crew face trials that will test them as never before.

Pirates of the Caribbean Dead Men Tell No Tails

Interesting that a movie that is meant to focus on Johnny Depp’s character Captain Jack Sparrow only has one real shot of him in the trailer. This movie now looks like Transformers at sea. The trailer showed no plot just lots of moving things, CGI characters running around and explosions. We get no idea who the characters are and what the story is. Visually a cool trailer but nothing to get excited at. Disney should have shown us something from some of their many more interesting films.

Captain Jack Sparrow finds the winds of ill-fortune blowing even more strongly when deadly ghost pirates led by his old nemesis, the terrifying Captain Salazar, escape from the Devil’s Triangle, determined to kill every pirate at sea…including him. Captain Jack’s only hope of survival lies in seeking out the legendary Trident of Poseidon, a powerful artefact that bestows upon its possessor total control over the seas.

John Wick Chapter 2

This trailer does a great bait and switch with the opening set to look like the new Fifty Shades movie before cutting to Keanu Reeves killing every body. The Trailer gives off the vibe similar to the movie with lots of guns, actions and fast cars with Reeves being the coolest character in the movie. The trailer moves too fast to tell if we are seeing any new footage but it showcases the awesome action to be expecting the sequel to John Wick

After returning to the criminal underworld to repay a debt, John Wick discovers that a large bounty has been put on his life.

Life

The teasers for Life gives of an Alien (1979) vibe, with a mysterious creature haunting the crew of a space ship. This teaser was a shorter one since the trailer for the movie came out only a few days ago so we do not seen anything new but it is the type of teaser to grab the attention of the Super Bowl crowd. The teaser gives off the vibe of a great sci-fi thriller and has me very excited.

Life tells the story of the six-member crew of the International Space Station that is on the cutting edge of one of the most important discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extra-terrestrial life on Mars. As the crew begins to conduct research, their methods end up having unintended consequences and the life form proves more intelligent than anyone ever expected.

A Cure for Wellness

I had not heard of this movie before today so the trailer was interesting to see. A big pharmaceutical style commercial was released along with this trailer telling people the benefits of a cure for wellness and the dangerous side effects. It was impressive viral marketing especially given so many commercials on Super Bowl Sunday. I am now really intrigued by this movie given the cast it has and the premise set up it could be a great psychological thriller. We do not get too much in the way of story from the trailer but it definitely feels like a suspenseful movie. I think I may have to check this movie out.

An ambitious young executive is sent to retrieve his company’s CEO from an idyllic but mysterious “wellness center” at a remote location in the Swiss Alps but soon suspects that the spa’s miraculous treatments are not what they seem.
