Razzie Awards

The nominations for the Golden Raspberry 37th annual show came out this week. These awards are more commonly knows as the Razzies and are awarded to films, actors and actress and production staff that are voted worst of the year. Though there are some really bad performances and movies on this list it appears that the organisation are just attacking unpopular movies as opposed to the worst. I have the full list below and will comment on the nominations, what I saw and whom I think will ‘win’ the category.

Note as much as I didn’t like Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad it is really unfairly treated in these nominations.

Some of these movies did not get a wide release in Australia making them hard to see.

  • Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Dirty Grandpa
  • Gods of Egypt (Runner Up)
  • Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party
  • Independence Day: Resurgence (Winner)
  • Zoolander 2

I saw Independence Day: Resurgence on the plane, there was no way I was paying for to see it and I am glad I didn’t. That movie was garbage and should win Worst Picture. Gods of Egypt is just a mess with terrible CGI, bland acting and poor direction. It is likely to be runner up. Zoolander 2 was so disappointing since I love the first one and deserved to be there. Dirty Grandpa was a dumb dirty comedy with a few laughs. Whilst I didn’t like BVS there are some cool moments in it and it should not be up for worst picture, most disappointing maybe but not worst.

  • Dinesh D’Souza and Bruce Schooley, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party
  • Roland Emmerich, Independence Day: Resurgence (Winner)
  • Tyler Perry, Boo! A Madea Halloween
  • Alex Proyas, Gods of Egypt
  • Zack Snyder, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (Runner Up)
  • Ben Stiller, Zoolander 2

You cannot get nominated for Worst Picture and not get Nominated for Worst Director. Whilst Zoolander 2, Independence Day Resurgence and Gods of Egypt are all terrible movies I think Zack Snyder will win this category based on how divisive Batman V Superman is and much of the blame for the films problems has fallen to him.

  • Ben Affleck, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Gerard Butler, Gods of Egypt and London Has Fallen (Winner)
  • Henry Cavill, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Dinesh D’Souza, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party
  • Robert De Niro, Dirty Grandpa
  • Ben Stiller, Zoolander 2 (Runner Up)

One thing all moviegoers can agree on when it comes to Batman V Superman is that Ben Affleck was the best part of the movie. He should not be nominated for this at all. Henry Cavill was victim of a bad script and direction so he is being unfairly treated. Gerard Butler will probably win this award though how Jesse T Usher did not get nominated for his performance in Independence Day Resurgence I’ll never know.

  • Megan Fox, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (Winner)
  • Tyler Perry, Boo! A Madea Halloween
  • Julia Roberts, Mother’s Day
  • Rebekah Turner, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party
  • Naomi Watts, The Divergent Series: Allegiant and Shut In
  • Shailene Woodley, The Divergent Series Allegiant

I am going to be honest I have not seen any of the movies on this list. Naomi Watts is a great actress in a bad franchise and I was a fan of Shailene Woodley in Snowden. Interesting to note Tyler Perry a man who plays a woman is nominated for worst actress. My guess would be Megan Fox based on how bad she looked in TMNT 2 trailers.

  • Nicholas Cage, Snowden
  • Johnny Depp, Alice Through the Looking Glass
  • Jesse Eisenberg, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (Runner Up)
  • Will Ferrell, Zoolander 2
  • Jared Leto, Suicide Squad (Winner)
  • Owen Wilson, Zoolander 2

Nicholas Cage was really good in Snowden this is just a pick on Nicholas Cage moment. I think the award should go to either guys from Zoolander, though I believe given the extremely negative feedback on their performances it will go to Jared Leto, or potentially Jesse Eisenberg.

  • Julianne Hough, Dirty Grandpa
  • Kate Hudson, Mother’s Day
  • Aubrey Plaza, Dirty Grandpa (Runner Up)
  • Jane Seymour, Fifty Shades of Black
  • Sela Ward, Independence Day: Resurgence
  • Kristen Wiig, Zoolander 2(Winner)

How Cara Delevingne was not nominated for her role in Suicide Squad blows my mind, she was awful as Enchantress. There is a lot of hate towards Dirty Grandpa so no surprise that Aubrey Plaza got nominated, though it looked like she was putting in some effort. Kristen Wiig who is an extremely talented comedian like most of the comedians in Zoolander 2 was just awful. She is my pick for the win. There is also a lot of hate towards Mothers Day but I never saw it.

  • Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Any Two Egyptian Gods or Mortals, Gods of Egypt (Winner)
  • Johnny Depp and his Vomitously Vibrant Costume, Alice Through the Looking Glass
  • The Entire Cast of Once Respected Actors, Collateral Beauty
  • Tyler Perry and That Same Old Worn Out Wig, Boo! A Madea Halloween
  • Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson, Zoolander 2 (Runner Up)

With its over use of CGI the characters of Gods of Egypt looked awful when every they interacted. This was clearly the worst on-screen combo because it is the worst to look at and the worst acted. Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson is just terrible to watch so they would be the runner up. Have not seen Collateral Beauty or Madea.

  • Alice Through the Looking Glass
  • Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice
  • Fifty Shades of Black
  • Independence Day: Resurgence (Winner)
  • Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows (Runner Up)
  • Zoolander 2

This is basically the worst movie category again Independence Day: Resurgence was a terrible movie that hurt the original movie so that would be the tip for winner. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles received a very bad reception also and Zoolander 2 as previously stated was offensive to the original movie.

  • Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (Winner)
  • John M. Phillips, Dirty Grandpa
  • Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, Gods of Egypt
  • Dinesh D’Souza and Bruce Schooley, Hillary’s America: The Secret History of the Democratic Party
  • Dean Devlin, Roland Emmerich, James Vanderbilt, James A. Woods, and Nicolas Wright, Independence Day: Resurgence (Runner Up)
  • David Ayer, Suicide Squad

If Batman V Superman deserves to win a Razzie it is in this category and there is a strong chance it will. It seems if you were nominated for worst picture you will get nominated for worst writer. Gods of Egypt and Independence Day: Resurgence are both poorly written movies so they sit high on the list. I do not think Suicide Squad or Dirty Grandpa will take out this category. I have not seen Hillary’s America so I can’t judge though it has a 2 on Metacritic.

After a while there is only so much to say when it comes to the same films.
