Here is a look at the movie news that came out this week.
- Star Wars – Carrie Fisher will not be resurrected
- Deadpool 2
- Power Rangers
- A Dog’s Purpose
- The Emoji Movie
- Miles Morales Spider-Man
- White Men Can’t Jump remake
- Green Lantern Corp – Hal Jordan Shortlist
Disney confirmed this week that they have no plans to use Carrie Fishers digital image in future Star Wars films. Early in the week rumours began to circulate that Disney Executives had spoken to the Fisher family potentially regarding resurrecting her digitally for future Star Wars film. Whilst Disney and Lucasfilm normal does not comment on the rumour regarding Star Wars they felt it important to highlight that these rumours were indeed false and they had so much respect for Carrie Fisher and her character of Princess/General Leia. Here is the comment posted on the Official Star Wars website.
We don’t normally respond to fan or press speculation, but there is a rumor circulating that we would like to address. We want to assure our fans that Lucasfilm has no plans to digitally recreate Carrie Fisher’s performance as Princess or General Leia Organa.
Carrie Fisher was, is, and always will be a part of the Lucasfilm family. She was our princess, our general, and more importantly, our friend. We are still hurting from her loss. We cherish her memory and legacy as Princess Leia, and will always strive to honor everything she gave to Star Wars.
Star Wars fans became nervous about this issue after Peter Cushing’s character of Governor Tarkin was digitally recreated for Rogue One. Whilst this was an amazing step forward in digital technology, there is still a long way to go.
Hugh Jackman released a poster this week on his social media with the synopsis of Logan, his final outing as Wolverine. The plot teases a different style of film than we are use to from the X-Men universe. Later in the week 20th Century Fox released the final trailer for Logan which showed us a new look at the Dafne Keen who is predicated to play X-23. This trailer had some awesome fight sequences and demonstrated the reason this movie will gain an MA rating in Australia (R in USA). Unlike other Wolverine movies this ties in with the X-Men by bring back Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, though he is much older and much more unstable in this current incarnation.
Here’s the official synopsis for Logan:
In the near future, a weary Logan cares for an ailing Professor X in a hide out on the Mexican border.
But Logan’s attempt to hide from the world and his legacy are up-ended when a young mutant arrives, being pursued by dark forces.
Deadpool/ Wolverine/ Cable?
Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman are two of the most active celebrities on social media, so when the two of them post photos it is very easy to make the news. Both of these men share a photo of them together along with Pierce Brosnan, James Bond himself. This has a lead to much speculation that Brosnan would be playing Cable in Deadpool 2, as well as Hugh Jackman being in it as a cameo role. No confirmation has been given, just two photographs that lead the Internet to what it does best, speculate. One theory floating around is Brosnan could be playing Mr Sinister in an X-men movie. The most likely scenario is three men saw each other and decided to take a photo.
Shazam to be split into two films
Back in 2014 it was announced that Dwayne the Rock Johnson would be joining the DC cinematic universe as Black Adam, the Archenemy of Shazam. Originally the plan was to have Black Adam appear in the Shazam movie but it now seem that’s Warner Brothers is going to split the Movie into two with The Rock getting his own Black Adam Movie. Johnson was originally offered the role of Shazam but chose to play the villain, meaning Warner Brothers will be hard at work trying to cast an actor to play Shazam, with a need to find someone who can front up to The Rock being key. My pick would be either John Cena or Mark Wahlberg for Shazam and a good child actor to play Billy Batson, his teenage alter ego.
Power Rangers Trailer 2
Lionsgate released their second trailer for the new Power Rangers movie that comes out on March 23rd. This trailer gives us the first look at the Rangers in their suits as well as a look at the Zords, we are also introduced to Bryan Cranston as Zordon and Bill Hader as Alpha 5. I was not a Power Rangers fan growing up but this movie looks like it could be a lot of fun with some cool action sequences. The first trailer seems to be a little too much like Chronicle, where this trailer shows a fun popcorn flick. The film stars Naomi Scott, Becku G., Ludi Lin, RJ Cyler and Dacre Montgomery as the teens who become the Power Rangers
Here’s the synopsis for Power Rangers:
SABAN’S POWER RANGERS follows five ordinary teens who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove — and the world — is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat. Chosen by destiny, our heroes quickly discover they are the only ones who can save the planet. But to do so, they will have to overcome their real-life issues and before it’s too late, band together as the Power Rangers.
A Dogs Purpose
Its great when animals can be in film, what’s not great is when they are abuse or mistreated. TMZ leaked a video from the set of A Dogs Purpose showing the trainers forcing the terrified German Shepard into a pool with motors in it to simulate a rushing river. It is also reported that the director was present for this shoot, and someone yelled, “cut it” during the video. The film was referred to as a ‘beautiful love letter to all animals’ by the star of the film Josh Gad. Gad and Director Lasse Hallström both took to social media to denounce the actions taken in the video, with Hallström claiming he was very disturbed by the video and had no knowledge of the event. Gad who was a voice actor and not on set at all during production said he “reached out to the production team and studio to ask for an explanation for these disturbing images.”
In a not so surprising move the studio has cancelled the movies premier date. I can safely say as an animal lover I wont be seeing this movie.
The Emoji Movie
Yes you read that right, they are making an Emoji Movie and to make things worse they are actually getting some amazing talent in this film. It was recently confirmed that Sir Patrick Stewart would be voicing the Poop emoji, with Sony releasing some clever tweet about the actors joining the cast. It appears after the success of movies like The Lego Movie and Angry Birds that studios will be looking to cash in on these topics and The Emoji movie will be no different. The Movie stars T.J Miller, Maya Rudolph, Steven Wright, Jennifer Coolidge, Jake T. Austin, James Corden, and Ilana Glazer. The film is expected out in August.
Animated Spider-Man Movie based on Miles Morales
In other Sony news it was confirmed this week that the new Animated Spider-Man film would focus on the Miles Morales story. Miles Morales is the teenage son of an African American father and Puerto Rican mother who became Spider-Man after the death of Peter Parker in the Comics. There was a large push to use Morales in the new version of Spider-Man in the MCU but it appears Sony has some different plans for the character. This is a positive step forward that will hopefully lead a live action Miles Morales movie in the future. The Animated Ultimate Spider-Man movie will be written by Phil Lord (The Lego Movie, Jump Street Movies), Produced by Lord and Chris Miller (The Lego Movie, Jump Street Movies) and directed by Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey. The Film will be theatrically released in December 2018.
White Men Can’t Jump Remake
In remake news this week it was announced that the creator of the show Blackish Kenya Barris would be developing a remake of White Men Can’t Jump, the 1992 sports movie starring Woody Harrelson and Wesley Snipes. Athletes turned Producers Blake Griffin and Ryan Kalil along with Barris will produce the film. I am not sure there are large numbers of people who are calling for a remake of White Men Can’t Jump, but with the success of Barris’ show Blackish, it would appear he would be the man to helm such a project.
Green Lantern Corp
According to The Warp, a short list has appeared of Actors Warner Brothers wishes to play Hal Jordan in the up coming Green Lantern Corps Movie. At this time this list appears to be speculation mixed with wishful thinking as WB and DC have yet to comment on the list. If this is true, there are some interesting candidates up for the role.
- Tom Cruise
- Ryan Reynolds
- Jake Gyllenhaal
- Armie Hammer
- Bradley Cooper
- Joel McHale
Again this is just speculation, with it being highly unlikely that Ryan Reynolds would return to the role after his failed attempt as Hal Jordan but in particular due to the success of his Marvel character Deadpool. Bradley Cooper is also connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Rocket Racoon in Guardians of The Galaxy. Armie Hammer would be my tip for the role though I would not be upset to see either Gyllenhaal or McHale don the green suit. I have serious doubts they will cast Tom Cruise though.
